Walter's War

A battle on many fronts

Film Guide

This is the true story of the first black officer to be admitted to the British army during the First World War, a tale of bravery and success, a tale of friendship and prejudice.

Smoke, confusion, the sound of gun fire, the inevitability of death in the face of all that surround them. This was the reality for a soldier in the First World War. The story opens with the actions of a brave young officer as he tries to rescue others, receiving fatal injuries himself in the process. This is the story of Walter Tull – the first black officer to serve in the British army in the First World War, telling the story of his life, in his final moments.
From the loss of his parents when he was young; to the racial prejudice that he and his brother experienced in the orphanage; to the adoption of his brother, Edward, by a wealthy family, and the differences that this led to between them, Walter’s life has been marred by loss and exclusion.
Having gained a reputation for himself in the army through his leadership skills, and his ability to motivate others in the most horrifying situations, he wakes in hospital, where he is recovering from trench fever, to discover that he is being put forward for officer training.
Walter faces a difficult decision – to agree to the training would mean opening himself up to more of the prejudice to which he has been exposed all of his life. Having spent his life before the war as a professional footballer, he had frequently been exposed to very public racial slurs, and knows the effect that these can have upon a team of men. When his brother comes to visit him in hospital, he tries to disuade him from going back to the front – either as an officer, or as one of the men, however Walter accepts the offer.
In Scotland, the training proves to be every bit as challenging as Walter envisaged. The other recruits are all young and ambitious, and from far more privileged backgrounds than Walter. Can he prove himself when it seems that everyone is against him?

This is an emotional tale about the reality of war, it is a story about prejudice, trust and finding friendship, and love, in unexpected places.

Starring O.T. Fagbenle, Ewan Stewart, Dugald Bruce-Lockhart & Samara MacLaren.
